About the Port Stephens Region
Port Stephens is a large natural harbour located about 160 km north-east of Sydney. With an area of approximately 104 km˛, Port Stephens is larger than Sydney Harbour and has a narrow entrance between two striking hills of volcanic origin. It extends over 20 km inland and is fringed by natural bushland and white, sandy beaches. The harbour is mostly shallow and sandy but contains sufficient deep water to accommodate large vessels (the Queen Mary, for example, moored there during World War II).
The port (and also its southern headland Point Stephens), were named by Captain Cook when he passed on 11 May 1770, honouring Secretary of the Admiralty, Sir Philip Stephens. Throughout the 20th century, a number of small towns developed around the port as fishing, holiday and retirement communities. Since the 1970s, with improved road access from Sydney, and the increasing popularity of coastal retirement lifestyles, there has been major expansion of these towns.
The various bays and coastal areas in the Port Stephens region include Anna Bay, Fingal Bay, Lemon Tree Passage, Mallabula, Nelson Bay, Salamander Bay, Shoal Bay, Soldiers Point, Stockton Beach, One Mile Beach and the clothing-optional Samurai Beach.
Fishing, boating, swimming and Scuba diving are all popular activities in the area. The harbour is also home to a pod of bottle-nosed dolphins, which can be admired from the decks or boom-netting of dolphin-watching cruise vessels or from the ferries which travel between Nelson Bay and Tea Gardens. Whales can also be seen from around mid-October to late December.
Another popular attraction is Tomaree National Park, which stretches from Anna Bay to Shoal Bay, taking in some 20 km of varied and spectacular coastline. Throughout the area, spring brings a profusion of native flowers to brighten the bushland.
Visitors to the region can also enjoy the sight of koalas in the wild, particularly in Lemon Tree Passage.
