About MERIMBULA

The town of Merimbula is quite small, with a population of just under 4000 people. It has plenty of activities for families, is peaceful enough for a quiet break, and its remote situation and wilderness surroundings offer high energy adventure to those looking for something different.
Merimbula is located on the coastline of southern NSW, and is part of an area referred to as the Sapphire Coast, because of it the colour of its pristine waterways and beaches. The town lies around a small inlet, with a beach front on one side and Lake Merimbula on the other.
To the west is the Yurammie State Forest, which extends north where it becomes the Bournda National Park, and to the east are Merimbula’s five beaches and the open sea.

Whales can be seen migrating up the coast to the warmer waters of Queensland in June, July and August and returning with their young to their feeding grounds in the Antarctic from September to November. The majority of these are humpbacks, but both Southern Wrights and Minke whales can be seen as well. Both the open water and the lakes and estuary support a wide variety of marine life, including dolphins and seals, fairy penguins, pelicans and sea eagles.

There are plenty of sheltered places for young families to go swimming, fishing, canoeing and snorkeling. Pender Lea Horse Riding offers basic one hour rides to three hour treks, and Yellow Pinch Wildlife Park offers a chance to handle some of the local snakes and reptiles. There are also two theme parks. Magic Mountain has a roller coaster and water slides, toddler cars and the ‘Triassic Park’ dinosaur walk. Top Fun has mini golf, bowling and a laser game.

For something quieter, there is a boardwalk around Merimbula Lake, and plenty of picnic spots by the Bournda Lagoon. The town has three Art Galleries, which feature local artists, and plenty of family friendly cafes and seafood restaurants. Tourists interested in the town’s history can visit five storey Boyd’s Tower, which was built as a lighthouse in 1846, but turned into a whale watching site when the Government of the day refused permission to light it, or visit the Merimbula-Imlay Museum.

Adventurers can go deep sea game or shark fishing, or try sea kayaking or kite boarding. Boats can be chartered from a number of local mariners who also provide equipment. There are walks and trekking through the local National Parks, which feature seagrass beds, mangroves and salt and freshwater lakes. There is a National Parks and Wildlife Centre in Merimbula with both maps and information.


Merimbula has its own airport and can be reached by plane from Sydney or Melbourne.
