About ADAMINABY

The origins of the name Adaminaby are probably from a local Aboriginal word 'adamindumee', meaning either a camping or resting place or place of springs. European graziers arrived in the area in the 1830s. However, the living was hard, and the country remained sparsely settled until gold was discovered in the area in 1859. The town was proclaimed in 1885 and name Seymour. A year later the name was changed back to Adaminaby.

Old Adaminaby now lies under the waters of Lake Eucumbene, which was created as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme in 1958. The new town was built on higher ground and most of the historic landmarks from Old Adaminaby were moved to the new site.
