About COOMA

Originally spelt 'Coombah', meaning either big lake or open country in the local Aboriginal language, Cooma is still regarded as the main town in the Snowy Mountain region. In 1823 Captain Currie and Major Ovens explored the area during an expedition which moved south from Lake George in a search for good grazing land. The discovery of gold near Kiandra in 1959 brought boom times to Cooma as it was the only decent sized settlement in the area and miners and prospectors passed through in great numbers.

The arrival of the railway in 1889 made Cooma the centre of a winter tourist industry as it gave easy access to the snowfields. In 1949 Cooma became the central camp area during the construction of the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
