About TUMUT

The area was inhabited by the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people for thousands of years prior to European settlement. It is popularly believed that 'doomut' or 'tumit' was an Aboriginal word for camping ground or quiet resting place by the river. The first Europeans were Hume and Hovell, explorers who came across the Tumut River and subsequently the Tumut Valley in 1824 as they were travelling down the Murrumbidgee River. Settlers arrived four years later. The town was surveyed and laid out in 1848 but the township grew slowly until a major flood in 1852 persuaded the locals to form some kind of a permanent settlement.

The location of Tumut at 280m above sea level means that it has four distinct seasons. The area has a diversity of highlights - superb trout fishing, inland lakes, clean streams, gently sloping pastures to huge pine forest, peaked mountains and the massive Snowy Mountains Scheme.
