About BATEMANS BAY

It is thought that various Aboriginal groups lived in the area prior to white settlement, in particular the Murrinjari, Bergalia and Walbanga tribes. Captain Cook sighted the bay from the Endeavour in 1770 and named it after Nathaniel Bateman, his superior officer on the Northumberland which was engaged in a survey of the coasts of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Survivors from the wreck of the Sydney Cove were the first Europeans to explore the area, having reached the banks of the Clyde River in 1797. George Bass ventured south to explore the area and reported that it was too exposed to function as a port. The township was gazetted in 1854. Shipbuilding, oyster farming and a timber mill were established in the 1860s.

Today, Batemans Bay is a service centre for sawmilling, wattlebark production, dairying, cattle, agriculture, fishing and oyster farming, as well as being a popular tourist destination.
