About BERRY

The town was originally Broughton Creek until the name was changed by an Act of Parliament in 1890 in honour of Alexander Berry and his brother David. Alexander was an entrepreneurial Scotsman who settled in the area in the early 1820s. A million feet of cedar was found in the area in 1828, and became a profitable resource, much of it being exported to Europe.
The chief industry in the area is dairying, since the timber cutters left the region in the mid-nineteenth century.

Today Berry is a popular weekend destination, with a variety of gift, craft and antique shops. Stands of English oaks, elms and beech trees give the town an English feel.
