About JERVIS BAY

Middens and rock shelters indicate that Aborigines have been living in the area for over 20,000 years. One community still lives near Wreck Bay on the southern peninsula and the Jerringa people live on the northern peninsula. Captain Cook sighted Jervis Bay while sailing north. He named it Cape George as he discovered it on St George's Day in April 1770. It became Jervis Bay in 1791 when Lieutenant Richard Bowen named it Port Jervis after an admiral of the British fleet Sir John Jervis.

Whalers from Twofold Bay used the bay for anchorage in the 1790s. The first land grants were issued in 1827, and cedar provided the first industry, followed by dairying. Jervis Bay has a very deep, large natural harbour with a narrow entrance, which is sheltered by headlands of forest and heath land. The waters in the bay vary in hue from aquamarine to deep blue. It is bordered by the beautiful Booderee National Park.

Attractions in the area are the diverse flora and fauna, woodlands, swamps, mangroves, grassland, coastal scrub and heath land rich in flowers, eucalypt forest, lakes and estuaries, high sandy ridges, historic sites, majestic cliffs, and long beaches noted for their white sands.
