About KANGAROO VALLEY

Nestled between Shoalhaven and the Southern Highlands, Kangaroo Valley must be one of the most enchanting and picturesque areas in the state. The origins of the name appear to have come from the abundance of kangaroos in the valley. The land was occupied by the Wodi Wodi Aborigines long before European settlement. Aborigines were observed in the area until the 1860s, after which white settlement drove them from their traditional grounds. The first land survey of the Valley and the surrounding escarpments was made in 1831 by Robert Hoddle. Large land grants were made in 1835 and over the following years.

Irishman Charles McCaffrey and his family became the first whites to settle in the valley in 1846, and a number of the pioneer farmers who settled came from County Fermanagh in Ireland.

Today Kangaroo Valley is a small village with visitors attracted to the beautiful vista of green farm paddocks, the rainforest on the slopes of the valley, the pretty river, the bushwalking, craft shops, and restaurants and tea rooms. The National Trust classified the town in 1977.

The more adventurous bushwalkers can head up from the valley towards the dramatic Fitzroy Falls which tumble over the escarpment. Sheer sandstone cliffs almost entirely surround the valley.
