About MILTON

Prior to white settlement the area was inhabited by people of the Dhurga, Walbanja or Wadandian Aboriginal tribes for over 20,000 years. Thomas Florance surveyed the coastline in 1827, and the first land grant was issued to Reverend Thomas Kendall who felled timber and bred cattle on his property ''Kendall Dale''. The distinguished Australian poet, Henry Kendall, who was the grandson of Thomas, was born on the property in 1839. It is believed that the town was named after the 17th-century poet, John Milton. The economy was supported by dairying, wheat-growing, pig breeding, honey, maize and vegetables, a tannery works and the mining of silica and quartzite.

Today Milton attracts visitors for its range of cafes, antique shops, gift shops and craft outlets.
