About MORUYA

The area was once inhabited by the Wandandian or Bugelli-Manji Aboriginal tribes prior to European settlement. Thomas Florance surveyed the area from Batemans Bay to Moruya in 1827, and in 1828 Francis Flanagan, an Irish-born tailor, became the first white settler and landowner in the district. When the town site was surveyed by Surveyor Mitchell he wanted it be called Mherroyah, being the Aboriginal word for resting place of black swans which were a common sight in the district.

In 1851 gold was discovered upstream at Araluen and proved to be one of the richest goldfields in the country. Moruya became the service centre to the northern goldfields after the establishment of a new road from Araluen to Moruya. Fine grey granite was quarried from the 1860s, and some of the granite was used on the decorative columns of the facades at the Sydney GPO by Colonial Architect James Barnet in the 1870s.

Moruya is reliant upon timber, vegetables, cattle, dairying, fish and oysters for its economy. Boating, waterskiing and canoeing on the Moruya River are all popular activities for visitors.
