About NOWRA

The Dharawal Aborigines are thought to have lived in the area prior to European settlement and the name is believed to be derived from an Aboriginal word meaning either black cockatoo or camping place. The township was gazetted in 1852. The suspension bridge which was constructed over the Nowra Creek in 1887 was the only one of its kind in NSW. Ex-convict Mary Reibey, who had lived in the area from 1824, together with two of her sons, furthered the development of the village in the 1840s and 1850s. They added three wharves and established a steam-driven flour mill. Nowra was proclaimed a town in 1885.

While dairying and tourism are the major industries for the area, timber, vegetables, flour and a paper mill all contribute to the local economy. Nowra is a service centre for the naval base at Jervis Bay, and for the agricultural and coastal resorts in the vicinity.
