About SHOALHAVEN HEADS

The survivors of the wreck of the Sydney Cove crossed the area in 1797, followed by George Bass who explored Seven Mile Beach and crossed the shoals at the entrance to the Shoalhaven River, noting the fertile river flats. Lieutenant Kent mapped the coastline in 1805 with assistant surveyor-general James Meehan. Dense rainforest and heavy timber were typical of the area at that time. Fishermen lived in primitive huts for many years, and permanent settlement did not occur until the mid 1930s. The current site was known as ''Jerry Bailey'' from 1830 until 1955, when the name was changed to Shoalhaven Heads.

The town is located at the southern end of Seven Mile Beach. Boating, camping, fishing, golf and kite flying are all popular pastimes for locals and visitors to the town.
