About ULLADULLA

Prior to white settlement the coastal area around Ulladulla was inhabited by the Dhurga, Wandandian and/or Walbanja Aborigines. The origin of the town name is from an Aboriginal word ullada, supposedly meaning safe harbour, or possibly a compromise between that and the phrase holey dollar, which was a form of currency in NSW in the early 1800s.

In 1827 the surveyor Thomas Florance anchored his boat The Wasp in Ulladulla Harbour, which then became known as Wasp Harbour for a time. The Reverend Thomas Kendall was issued with the first land grant, and ran cattle and felled timber. His grandson Henry Kendall, who later became one of Australia's most distinguished poets, was born on the Kendall Dale estate in 1839. A site for the village was surveyed in 1837. An abundance of red cedar which was in demand for furniture construction ensured that Ulladulla prospered as a timber port in the 1840s. The area was also used for shipbuilding.

Dairying, timber and honey production are the mainstays of the local economy. Ulladulla today is a popular fishing port and holiday resort. Two headlands enclose the harbour and with beaches, lakes, a hinterland of state forest and national parkland, the area is ideal for aquatic activities, bushwalking and camping.
