About GOULBURN

The area around Goulburn was inhabited by the Gundungura Aborigines prior to European settlement. In 1798 John Wilson and his party became the first Europeans to see the Goulburn Plains. The first settlers arrived in 1825 and began to expand after 1850 due to an expansion of the pastoral industry and the discovery of gold in the area. The railway was opened in 1869 and the town boomed as coach-building, iron foundries and saddlery-making industries began to develop. As a result the town was gazetted as a municipality in 1859 and became Australia's first inland city in 1863.

Goulburn was also a garrison town with a lock-up being established in 1830 and a gallows/flogging post in 1832. Chain-bound convicts were involved in the construction of the Great South Road, which was commissioned by Governor Macquarie. Over time, both highwaymen and bushrangers frequented the area.

The long standing importance of wool-growing in the area is reflected in the Big Merino, however Goulburn also has a large manufacturing industry and is an important rail centre. There is something for everyone, with fishing, antique trails, bushwalking, adventure caving, and heritage walks and bicycle rides. Festivals such as A Classical Winter and the Australian Blues Music Festival are held annually in the town. Goulburn is home to The NSW Police Academy.
