About MOSS VALE

The area was once inhabited by the Dharawal Aborigines. Ex-convict John Wilson was the first European to explore the area in 1798, and his party were the first Europeans to see the koala and lyrebird. There were minor forays into the district over the next decade. In 1820 Governor Macquarie awarded Charles Throsby 1000 acres at Bong Bong in 1820, just north of the present day Moss Vale, and suggested the name Throsby Park. A store of limestone in the area led to the establishment of a railway link to Port Kembla and the village prospered in the 1870s and 1880s. It became the main service centre for dairying, market gardening, sheep and cattle raising. The town also became a popular destination for wealthy Sydneysiders who liked the healthy climate and beautiful scenery.

Moss Vale is known as the antique capital of the Southern Highlands, and is central to all other villages and attractions. Lush farming areas and spectacular natural scenery surround the town.
