About PICTON

The area was occupied by the Gundungura and Tharawal Aborigines prior to European settlement. In 1798 the party of ex-convict John Wilson were the first Europeans to investigate the area. Governor Macquarie had authorised construction of a road from Picton through to Goulburn by 1819, and there were subsequent grants of land in the area. In 1841 the township of Stonequarry was offered for sale as a private village. It was renamed Picton in 1845 after Sir Thomas Picton, who had been one of the Duke of Wellington's generals at the Battle of Waterloo.

Following the rerouting of the Hume Highway, Picton became a quiet township with many historic buildings. It is the centre of a mixed farming and dairying area.
