About New South Wales

New South Wales

Known as the eclectic state, NSW has approximately one third of Australia’s population, with Sydney the capital having the largest population.

Sydney is known internationally for its scenic harbour and famous coat hanger bridge.

If you’re looking for glitz, you’ll definitely find it in Sydney’s Kings Cross. For those seeking a subdued visit, you can stroll the historic Rocks area or take a picnic lunch and head off to the Botanical Gardens, where the grass goes all the way down to the shoreline, which is protected by a sweeping sandstone wall. This is an excellent vantage point to view the Sydney Opera House. This part of Sydney is where Captain Arthur Phillip established the first European settlement in 1788, and was once the home of the Euro people; the Kuring-Gai, Birrabir-ragal and Cadi peoples.

The town of Eden, in the far south of NSW is the last coastal town before the state of Victoria, with the neighbouring town of Merimbula being a popular coastal spot for those living in Canberra.
Tweed Heads, in the far north of NSW, is the northern most coastal town in NSW before you cross into Queensland.

Coastal and country towns in the south of NSW, starting from the Victorian border, northwards to the Queensland border, appear in the following order: Eden, Merimbula, Bega, Narooma, Moruya, Batemans Bay, Nowra, Wollongong, Sydney, Gosford, Newcastle, Maitland, Taree, Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Macksville, Nambucca Heads, Coffs Harbour, Grafton, Ballina, Byron Bay, Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads. All the coastal towns boast unbelievable sandy beaches with breathtaking headlands, and each town has special features and offer Australian cuisine, with many offering cuisine from other countries.

Many towns in NSW have a yearly festival, for example: wine, Jazz, country music (being the Tamworth Country and Music Festival that starts the second week in January), while other towns are known for their heritage value, seafood, locally produced wines, cheese manufacturing and much more. See more information on NSW towns in our ‘site map’, which can be found in the ‘tourism’ section on cancellations.com.au.

If you’re into nature, you’ll be amazed with NSW’s national parks, like the majestic Blue Mountains National park, which is world heritage listed. It’s approximately 120 kilometers from the Sydney CBD and is the home of the Wollemi Pine and the pre-historic Jenolan Caves, which are the world’s oldest open caves ever found. It’s estimated that the caves are around 100 million years old. Kosciuszko National Park is the largest in NSW, with the highest point being 2228 metres above sea level. Mungo National Park is part of the Willandra world heritage area. All three parks have breathtaking features to offer.

Landmark inland towns like Bourke, Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst, Armidale, Goulburn and our national capital Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory are well worth a visit.
New South Wales is extremely diverse and has much to offer the discerning tourist. And although it’s a large state with many towns, large and small, cheap airfares make it possible to see a lot in a short amount of time.

Almost every town in NSW offers some form of accommodation, from the town pub, to a farm stay experience, or maybe you would prefer to be pampered in boutique accommodation, like bed and breakfast accommodation, hotel, motel, apartment, self-contained cottage, holiday house, lodge or villa. Cancellations.com.au offers a wide selection of cheap hotel accommodation nationally and internationally, with hotels offering heavily discounted last minute specials of up to 70%.
