Uluru is a huge monolith rising out of the desert, located 465 km south west of Alice Springs. It rises 348 metres above the surrounding countryside, has a circumference of 9.4 km and an area of 3.33 sq. km. The colour of the rock is grey, but it is covered with a red iron oxide coating.

Uluru is a place name which is applied to the rock and the waterhole on top. The local Aboriginal people regard Uluru as a sacred site and their belief is that both the engravings and geometric rock piles were created by the Spirit Ancestor during the Dreamtime.

The former name Ayers Rock was named by William Gosse in 1873 after the Chief Secretary of South Australia, Sir Henry Ayers. In 1950 Ayers Rock was declared a national park and in 1985 the title to the Rock was handed back to the Anangu Aboriginal peoples who were the traditional owners. The Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service was subsequently granted a 99-year lease on the park by the traditional owners.

Today Uluru is visited by many visitors who are captivated by its beautiful changing colours as the sun rises and sets.
