About the Central Australia / Alice Springs Region

The Central Australia Region is the Northern Territory’s southern half, from a latitude near but to the south of Tennant Creek down to the South Australian border. For a brief period from 1927, the Region was a federal territory in its own right, while the Top End Region was proclaimed North Australia. The two regions were recombined into the Northern Territory in 1932.

The principal town in the region is Alice Springs, the second largest settlement in the Northern Territory. Nearly equidistant from Adelaide and Darwin, the town is close to the geographic centre of Australia. Alice Springs has both western and Aboriginal influences. The town's focal point, the Todd Mall, hosts a number of Aboriginal art galleries and community events. Alice Springs' desert lifestyle has inspired several unique and interesting events such as the Camel Cup and the Henley-on-Todd Regatta.

The MacDonnell Ranges run east and west of Alice Springs and contain a number of hiking trails and swimming holes. The Simpson Desert, southeast of Alice Springs, is one of Australia's great wilderness areas containing giant red sand dunes and interesting rock formations such as Chambers Pillar and Rainbow Valley.

The major tourist destination in Central Australia is the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National, 440 km south-west of Alice Springs. The park covers 1326 km sq, and is named for its two most notable landmarks: Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (Mount Olga).

Uluru is a vast sandstone formation standing 348 m high with most of its bulk below the ground. It measures 9.4 km in circumference. The Rock is notable for appearing to change colour as the different light strikes it at different times of the day and year, with sunset a particularly remarkable sight when it briefly glows red.

Kata Tjuta are a group of 36 large, domed, conglomerate formations located about 25 km from Uluru. The highest point, Mount Olga, rises approximately 546 m above the surrounding plain (203 m higher than Uluru).
