About ADELAIDE RIVER

The small township of Adelaide River is located on the Stuart Highway and is a convenient stopover point between Darwin and Katherine. It is located near the headwaters of the Adelaide River which is known for its large population of saltwater crocodiles.

Adelaide River and the surrounding area became a major military headquarters for the Australian and US operations after the bombing of Darwin in 1942. The area produced fruit and vegetables for the troops and was a weekend retreat for service personnel from Darwin. The township declined in importance after the war.

Local points of interest include the Adelaide River War Cemetery and the adjacent Civilian Wartime Cemetery, which are the final resting places for 432 servicemen and 63 civilians, all of whom died as a result of Japanese bombing raids during WWII.

There are tours of the Adelaide River where it is common to see crocodiles, buffalos, sea eagles, kites, jabirus, snakes and other wildlife. Try the local barramundi and chips.
