About DARWIN

Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory. It is located between Beagle Gulf and Port Darwin and situated on Fannie Bay.

The Dutch visited the northern coastline of Australia in the 1600s and created the first European maps of the area. The Dutch named such locations as Arnhem Land and Groote Eylandt. Port Darwin was named after Charles Darwin by Captain J C Wickham as he passed the harbour in the HMS Beagle in 1939. The determined construction of the Overland Telegraph coincided with attempts to get the settlement up and running. Successive waves of settlers came to the area from 1870 and 1900, creating a rich racial mixture which became an important part of the history of the city.

In February 1942, 188 Japanese warplanes attacked Darwin and over 243 people were killed and immense damage caused to the city. On Christmas Day 1974, Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin and became Australia's worst natural disaster. The Fannie Bay Gaol, which was constructed in 1882 and is one of the Territory's most important heritage sites, was turned into a Museum in 1982 and houses a Cyclone Tracy display.
Today, the city of Darwin has one of the most multicultural and progressive communities in Australia. A heritage of Asian, European and Aboriginal has formed an exotic cultural mix in a city with a pretty harbour, a year round average temperature of 32 degrees celsius, and a vibrant night life.
