Katherine is situated on the banks of the Katherine River between Darwin and Alice Springs. The main attraction in the area is the spectacular Katherine Gorge. The river and the nearby gorge were popular meeting places for the local Aboriginal people as it was the junction of the traditional lands of the Jawoyan, Walpiri, Dagaman and Wardiman.

John McDouall Stuart passed through the area in 1862 and named the Katherine River after the wife of his sponsor, James Chambers (a South Australian pastoralist who had become obsessed with the idea of an overland telegraph link). The Katherine Telegraph Station was established in 1872 and the Overland Telegraph opened up the whole area for pastoral activities.

The Katherine Gorge National Park is located 32 km north east of Katherine. Swimming, bushwalking, boating and canoeing are the main activities in the park. There are some spectacular walks, however it should be noted that the area is prone to flooding and it can be dangerous during the wet season. The Cutta Cutta Cave Nature Park is also an attraction in the area.
