About TENNANT CREEK

Tennant Creek is located at the junction of the Stuart and Barkly Highways and is the administrative centre for the surrounding areas. The first European to pass through the area in 1860 wa s the explorer John McDouall Stuart, who named the creek after his sponsor John Tennant. Stuart was mapping a path for the overland telegraph which was being extended from England to Australia. When the telegraph line was completed in 1872, a permanent repeater station was erected and people began moving into the area.

Small traces of gold were discovered in 1879 but it wasn't until gold traces were found in 1932 in a lump of black ironstone that prospectors began to move into the area. Despite the harsh conditions and the lack of facilities, this sparked Australia's last great gold rush, and by 1934 there were 600 prospectors in the area which prompted the government to gazette the township of Tennant Creek. After the surface gold had been removed, attention shifted underground and there are still many mines operating in the Tennant Creek region.
