About the Brisbane Region
Brisbane
In 1824 the first settlement was established at Redcliffe on Morton Bay where the difficult convicts from Botany Bay (in Sydney) were sent.
Brisbane is the third – largest city in Australia, with Sydney being the largest, followed by Melbourne. It’s a city with one of the fastest growing economies in Australia and also has the fastest growing population of any other city in Australia. It’s estimated that 1000 people each week choose to move to Brisbane. The current estimated population is around 1.8 million. If you like a laid-back life style with a subtropical climate, and you have a love for arts and culture, the chances are you’ll love Brisbane.
In September each year, for three weeks, Brisbane is in full festival mode, with an estimated 1.5 million people participating in the celebrations. The festival celebrations extend out to suburban streets, parks and backyards.
If you’re into outdoor adventure, and you don’t want to leave the city, you’ll get a buzz when visiting ‘Riverlife’, Brisbane’s award winning adventure centre, which specializes in kayaking, rock climbing, abseiling, and offers equipment hire of kayaks, mountain bikes, rollerblades and kick bikes. For children wishing to participate, keep in mind that there is a minimum age, being 8 years.
You have 1,200 kilometres of walkways, paths and clearly marked bikeways throughout the city.
For those with a love of whales, Moreton Bay and Islands is the place to go. It’s only 25 kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD and is renowned as one of the world’s best whale-watching spots.
