Brisbane is a relaxed, cosmopolitan city that makes the most of the warm Queensland climate and a comfortable location in a bend of the Brisbane River.

The city is full of parks and gardens connected by paths and cycleways.

The CBD is bordered by the Roma Street Parkland on one side, with its magnificent subtropical gardens, and the Botanic Gardens on the other. The Gardens continue down to the riverbanks, and include unique mangrove swamps.

In the midst of this green oasis, Brisbane CBD is a mix of modern high rise, and beautifully preserved historic buildings. Parliament House, built in the ‘french renaissance’ style with colonnades and archways to suit the tropical climate, has been in use since 1868. There are two cathedrals, St Stephens, built in 1874, and St John’s built in 1900. City Hall, still home to Brisbane City Council, is a striking 1930’s neoclassical building set in spacious St George’s Square. Its 92m high clocktower is open to the public, and provides a panoramic view of the city and its surrounds. Other places worth investigating include the convict built Commissariat Stores Museum, Anzac Square, with Greek Cenotaph war memorial, and the General Post Office, built in 1879 and still in use.

The South Bank Parklands, on the opposite side of the river, are the hub of Brisbane’s cultural life. You can stroll through the South Bank Markets, or through the shade of the Bougainvillea Arbour, or go for a swim in a man-made lagoon with its own sandy beach! Afterwards, check out the view from the top of the Wheel of Brisbane, the 60m tall ferris wheel.

At one end of the South Bank, you will find the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, the Queensland Art Gallery, and the Museum, the State Library, and the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art. At the other end, you can walk or cycle across the Goodwill Bridge to the Botanical Gardens, or visit the Maritime Museum, to see relics of some of the early shipwrecks on the Queensland coast. Opposite the park is the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre, with facilities that vary from ballrooms to boardrooms.

Victoria Bridge on the South Bank is also a ferry terminus. Hop on board to travel directly to the heritage Regatta hotel, the former Treasury building, now a casino, to Story Bridge, for a bridge climb, or further down the river to the old Brisbane Powerhouse, now a music venue, or take a day trip to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.
