About DAINTREE

Scottish explorer and geologist George Dalrymple named the Daintree River and the Daintree Village after Richard Daintree, Queensland's Agent-General in London. Timber cutters in search of cedar trees settled in the area from the late 1870s. Dairy farms and beef cattle became the economic mainstay of the area, followed today by tourism.

The area is at the centre of some of the most beautiful rainforest in far North Queensland. Local attractions include rainforest walks where there is some of the rarest flora and fauna in the world, the Daintree Rainforest Discovery Centre, and the Timber Museum which has an exhibition of the original tools used by the loggers, as well as wooden furniture made from local timbers.

There are numerous cruises on the Daintree River which would be of particular interest to birdwatchers.
