If you're planning to travel in Far North Queensland and prefer to only “visit” the major centres, Fishery Falls is just the place for you. Only 37klms South of Cairns it makes the perfect peaceful retreat.

As has happened so many times to me before, I stumbled over this little village while looking for a camp location at Mission Beach a few weeks previously and had decided to take a closer look upon my return.

I am so glad that I did!

I called in and had a short chat with Dianne & Skin (Vernon) who own and run Fishery Falls Holiday Park. They invited me to have a look around before I committed myself to booking in. I was amazed at how green and spacious the park was and decided to return and spend 4 nights there over the July long weekend. The reason for the long weekend was that the Cairns Show was on which makes Fishery Falls even more attractive if you decide to take your family to a day at the show! It is just the place to relax and wind down afterwards.

The village is central to many attractions and surrounded by beautiful green mountains and only consists of a Pub, a unique Glass Art Gallery and the Holiday Park that has award winning gardens where birds and butterflies abound. The Creek flows all year round, and is a great spot for relaxing on secluded benches that have been strategically placed so that you can believe you are the only person appreciating the tranquil surroundings.

This is the first article that I've written since I teamed up with my partner (Jean). One of the reasons for this short stay at Fishery Falls was to ascertain if we wanted to keep my current camper or “up-size” to a Motor-home or Caravan. The camp site was perfect to test our joint needs with plenty of room to spread out as well as access to areas that we could exercise our dog. I also appreciate the need for a female viewpoint in my articles. The female viewpoint was expressed succinctly - “We need to Up-size” our van!

I found Dianne & Skin and the other guests to be friendly and helpful with lots of advice on where to visit and what to see. From Fishery Falls you can easily access the Tablelands , the Boulders, Skyrail and Kuranda Scenic Railway, Walking Trails, Reef and River Fishing or book a Mulgrave River or Franklin Islands or other reef tour.

The Park has a variety of accommodation options for guests – some were camping in tents or campers, others were in their own caravans and a few families stayed in the Cabins or Villas. While the park was quite full (due to the long weekend), it didn't seem crowded or cramped. While I currently travel in a camper that tows a camp-kitchen, I took full advantage of the parks' own Camp Kitchen which is one of the best I've seen in the two years that I've been travelling and writing articles. It was also a fun place to meet other travellers and be entertained for free while carrying out mundane chores like washing dishes!

The other amenities were very functional and most importantly “clean” with plenty of hot water which was important to us as the nights and mornings were quite “fresh” at this time of year! The days were ideal with temperatures in the mid 20's.

Our powered site was shady and very private and was also serviced with TV antenna points for those who wish to keep in touch with the news or their favourite TV shows. We elected to take full advantage of the peace and quiet with only a little music in the evenings.
We strolled to the pub one afternoon where we checked out the lunch and dinner menus and I “researched the quality of the beer”. The beer was cold and the glasses clean (male viewpoint). We returned for a pub meal one evening which was beautifully prepared and huge! More importantly, the service was excellent and the meal very reasonable priced. The other patrons were very friendly and we were welcomed into their conversations.

In summary, we thoroughly recommend a visit to Fishery Falls Holiday Park where you will find the facilities and location excellent. Jean and I have agreed to spend one weekend a month there as a regular short getaway from Cairns while we assess our joint needs for the circumnavigation of Australia in the not too distant future.
