About HERVEY BAY

Fraser Island is one of the land masses that forms Hervey Bay and within that, Platypus Bay. Captain James Cook named the bay after Augustus Hervey, a sailor known as the ''English Casanova'' Scandinavian settlers moved in during the 1870s and the area was basically used for dairy farming. Sugar cane plantations were introduced in the 1880s and Kanakas were brought from the South Pacific Islands to work as constricted labourers for over 40 years.

The area becomes a playground for migrating humpback whales from July to October. The waters teem with marine wildlife.

Other attractions include a wildlife park, a bird sanctuary, water skiing, scuba diving, fishing, walking, and exploring Fraser Island.
