Hervey Bay is a rapidly growing city in southeastern Queensland, Australia. The 'Bay' benefits from a sub-tropical climate with no real extremes (average 30 degrees Celsius in summer and 23 degrees in winter) and has been voted in the top three of 'best climates' in the world.

The city is situated on the shores of the South Pacific Ocean, and is only a short distance from Fraser Island and Lady Elliot Island. The local economy thrives on tourists, for whom whale watching, Fraser Island and Lady Elliot Island are the major drawcards. Recent figures suggest that more than 600,000 people visit the city each year.

Fraser Island (Batjala K'Gari) is the largest sand island in the world. It can be reached by ferry from Hervey Bay or Inskip Point north of Rainbow Beach, or chartered flight via Maroochydore Airport. It has over 100 dune lakes which are some of the cleanest lakes in the world. The 75 Mile Beach runs along most of the east coast of Fraser Island and has a number of excellent highlights such as Champagne Pools, Indian Head, the Maheno Wreck and Eli Creek.

Lady Elliot Island is the southern-most coral cay of the Great Barrier Reef. The island lies 85 kilometres north-east of Bundaberg and covers an area of approximately 40 hectares. It is home to a small resort and airstrip, which is serviced daily by flights from Gladstone, 1770, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Maroochydore, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Activities on the island include reef walking, scuba diving, snorkelling and bird, turtle and whale watching. Lady Elliot Island is one of only six island resorts on the Great Barrier Reef, and one of only three with direct flight access to the island airstrip.

The South Burnett is a peanut growing and wine-producing region on the Great Dividing Range, north of the Darling Downs. Attractions in the area include several dams, picnic and camping facilities next to Kinbombi Falls, and garnet gem fields just west of Proston.
