About STANTHORPE

Stanthorpe is located 223 km south-west of Brisbane on the New England highway. It was first settled in the 1870s as a coach station, and it was not until tin was discovered in 1871 that miners moved into the area. The town was called 'Stannum', the Latin word for tin. After the railway arrived, there was an influx of German settlers, then soldier settlements after World War I and Italian POWs and migrants after World War II.

The town is nestled in the heart of the Granite Belt, and is totally surrounded by large granite outcrops. Girraween National Park and Sundown National Park are the two most important National Parks in the district. The high altitude and unique soil provide excellent growing conditions for grapes (there are more than 45 wineries in the area), stone fruit, apples and berries, as well as sheep and cattle grazing. The town is surrounded by unspoilt National Parks, including Girraween National Park, Bald Rock National Park and Boonoo Boonoo National Park.

Stanthorpe has a large number of B&B establishments and self-contained cottages. The wines and regional produce of the area are celebrated by the Wine and Food Affair (held every other year in February), and the Biennial Apple and Grape Harvest Festival (held each even-numbered year in February/March)
