About MACKAY

Charleville is located on the banks of the Warrego River. Edmund Kennedy first explored the area in 1847 during an expedition to solve ''the riddle of the rivers''. He succeeded in proving that the waterways in Central Queensland flowed south into Channel country rather than north into the Gulf of Carpentaria. The area was settled in the 1860s. The location of Charleville near a permanent waterhole meant that is was a major stock route. As many as 500 bullock teams passed through each year. Cobb & Co established a coach building factory in Charleville in 1893.

In the 1920s the first Qantas service took off from Charleville, bound for Cloncurry. The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) was established in 1943. In 1966 the Charleville School of Distance Education was established in conjunction with the RFDS Base and it was the third school of the air established in Queensland.
