About the Mackay Region Region
Mackay is a city on the eastern coast of Queensland, Australia, about 970 km north of Brisbane, on the Pioneer River. Mackay is nicknamed the sugar capital of Australia because its region produces more than a third of Australia's cane sugar. The city has an average temperature of 24.7°C.
One of the first Europeans to travel through the Mackay region was Captain James Cook, who reached the Mackay coast on 1 June 1770 and named several local landmarks, including Cape Palmerston, Slade Point and Cape Hillsborough. The City of Mackay was later founded on Yuibera traditional lands.
Mackay is 80 km from Eungella National Park, covered by dense rainforest and known for its platypuses. Despite being tropical, snow has fallen at Eungella National Park twice in recorded history - in 1964 and 2000.
It is also close to the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Island National Park. Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens, opened in 2003, focus on rare native plants of Central Queensland. They are located in Lagoon St, West Mackay, on the way to the City Gates. Before 2003, the area was commonly called The Lagoons. The Lagoons were redeveloped into the Botanic Gardens - complete with new plants, flowers, pathways, children's rides, and a restaurant.
Mackay holds a current position as a stop-over location for tourists travelling in the area - as is evident by the many motor-inns - but the community is currently working towards greater capitalisation of the tourism market. Several new facilities, such as Artspace Mackay, are also attracting tourists to the region.
Mackay Festival of Arts is one of Queensland’s leading regional arts festivals. In 2007 the Festival hosted some of the country’s greatest performing artists and delivered the largest program in the event’s 20 year history.
