About LONGREACH

Longreach is located on the Thomson River, and is the largest town in Central Queensland. It is one of Queensland's most prosperous wool and beef areas. Edward Kennedy found and named the Thomson River in 1847 and Longreach was named as a description of the ''long reach'' of the river. Sheep and cattle were sent overland into the area and in the late 1860s the vast ''Bowen Downs'' station was established. At that time it covered 1.75 million acres and stocked around 70,000 head of cattle.

The town boomed in the 1920s due to the success of the wool industry. Qantas established a booking office in 1820, local graziers funded the airline and a hangar was built in 1921. The Hangar was Qantas' first operational base from 1922-34. The hangar now houses the Qantas Founders Outback Museum.

Attractions in the town include Jackson's Weapons Museum, Starlight's Lookout and the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame which stands as a tribute to the explorers, pioneers, stockmen, rough riders, poets, writers and artists, the people who pioneered and developed the outback.
