About MOUNT ISA

Mount Isa is the largest town in western Queensland. Prior to white settlement, the area was inhabited by the Kalkadoon Aboriginal people, a fierce warlike tribe that ruled the Emu Foot Province, now known as Mt Isa. Pastoralists arrived in the area in the 1870s.

Copper was mined from the 1880s until the early 1920s when there was a price slump, it again became a main source of revenue in the area in the 1950s. Prospector John Miles discovered vast deposits of silver, lead and zinc in 1923 and in 1924 Mount Isa Mines Ltd was formed and is today one of the world's most highly mechanised and cost efficient mines.

Some of the town attractions include mine tours, mining museums such as the John Middlen Museum and the Frank Ashton Rotary Underground Museum, The Riversleigh Fossil Centre and the Kalkadoon Tribal Centre and Cultural Keeping Place for the preservation the culture and heritage of the Kalkadoon people.
