About WINTON

Winton is an important cattle and sheep raising region. It was originally known as Pelican Waterhole. Several parties who were looking for the explorers Burke and Wills passed through in the early 1860s and the area was settled shortly after.

Winton has an association with the great Australian bush poet A.B. ''Banjo'' Paterson. He wrote his famous song ''Waltzing Matilda'' during a visit to Dagworth Station in 1895.

Local attractions include The Waltzing Matilda Centre, Lark Quarry Environmental Park has the largest group of footprints of running dinosaurs uncovered anywhere in the world, the Corfield & Fitzmaurice general store which has been listed by the National Trust, and Carisbrooke Station which is a working sheep and cattle station and wildlife sanctuary with remarkable aboriginal rock paintings and dramatic scenery.
