About the Outback Queensland Region
Outback Queensland is the large Western region stretching from Hughenden, Julia Creek and Mount Isa in the north of the state to the New South Wales border in the south. Tourist bodies divide this area into the North Wets, Central West and South West.
The North West is often referred to as Dinosaur Country, since it has been the site of numerous major finds of fossils. Attractions in the area include ecellent caving possibilities in Camooweal, the Hughenden area's national parks and Flinders Discovery Centre (which has an exceptional display of fossils from our prehistoric past, as well as a full-size replica of a Muttaburrasaurus), and Mount Isa's Riversleigh Fossil Fields and Lawn Hill Gorge in Boodjamulla National Park.
The Central West is closely associated with Australia's stockmen heritage and its primary poet Banjo Patterson. This history comes to life in Longreach's Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame. Other places of great historical interest include the picturesque Barcaldine (the 'Garden City of the West'), Ilfracombe with its extensive display of historical agricultural machinery, and Tambo's Heritage Walk.
The South West region stretches from the historical far western town of Birdsville, nestled between Sturt's Stony Desert and the sandy Simpson Desert, to Mitchell in the east, home of the very popular tourist stop-over, the Great Artesian Spa. Another popular artesian spa is found in the town of Bedourie, while enthusiasts of fossicking and precious stones will be drawn to Quilpie, a town closely associated with the boulder opal. Travellers in the area can either acquire a fossicking permit or join fossicking tours.
Another popular feature of the region is the Diamantina National Park, a popular location for campers, bird-watchers and fishermen.
A popular form of accommodation in the area are working livestock stations, where travellers can experience outback life to the fullest.
