About the Rockhampton / Capricorn Region

The Capricorn Coast is a region in Central Queensland, between Keppel Sands to the south, and Byfield and Shoalwater Bay to the north. It lies astride and to the north of the Tropic of Capricorn, from approximately Stanage Bay in the north, to the Fitzroy River in the south, and inland to about Rockhampton. Much of the northern half is occupied by the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Reserve and is off-limits to unauthorised personnel. The southern half is on Keppel Bay, a broad and somewhat shallow bay studded with islands, the largest and most widely known being Great Keppel Island.

The region has a tropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. This combination of an equable climate and proximity to a relatively benign bay has led to a relaxed lifestyle centred on the beach and the sea.

Yeppoon is the largest town on the Capricorn Coast and the administrative centre of Livingstone Shire. It is situated around 700 km north of the state capital, Brisbane. Long stretches of beaches are the main tourist attraction, while the islands of the Keppel Group, in particular Great Keppel Island, are another drawcard. The Rosslyn Bay boat harbour caters for professional and privately owned vessels.

North of the town is the Byfield State Forest and National Park. The State Forest consists largely of pine plantations. The National Park is largely coastal and sand dune based geographical areas. It is popular with Four Wheel Drive enthusiasts.

Great Keppel Island lies 15 kmfrom the coast off Yeppoon and is the largest of the eighteen islands in the Keppel Group, covering more than 14.5 km sq.
