About ROMA

Roma is located at the intersection of the Warrego Highway and the Great Inland Way, now the shortest route between Cairns and Melbourne. It lies at the centre of a rich sheep and cattle grazing area, and services the rural and oil and gas industries. The area was first settled in the late 1840s and has the distinction of being the first town gazetted in the new colony of Queensland. Roma was named after Lady Roma Bowen, the wife of the Queensland Governor of the time.

The town has a number of gracious old houses and interesting hotels. Petroleum was discovered in Roma in 1900, and there is a $7 million living memorial to the pioneers of Australia's oil and gas industry, which is a must see for any visitor.

Other local attractions include the Meadowbank Museum with a fine collection of memorabilia, and the Romavilla Winery.
