About ADELAIDE

Adelaide is the only capital in Australia with no convict history. Instead, it was laid out in a spacious grid pattern planned by Surveyor General Colonel Light. Visitors can stroll through the CBD and see the sights, including the gothic cathedrals of St Peter and St Francis Xavier that led early visitors to refer to Adelaide as ‘the city of Churches’, shopping hotspot Rundle Mall, the Town Hall and Victoria Square, the Museum and Art Gallery and perfectly preserved Ayers House, once the home of Sir Henry Ayers and now a museum.

On one side of the CBD are the Botanical Gardens with the elaborate Bicentennial Conservatory. On the other side are Parliament House and the Festival Centre.

Like many other Australian cities, Adelaide sits right on the coastline, and has seaside suburbs with great swimming beaches. Ride on the vintage tram from Victoria Square to beachside Glenelg, and while you are there, take the kids to the Beachouse to try out the waterslides and bumper boats. Or if you prefer, you can scare the kids silly at The Rodney Fox Shark Experience, a shark museum. Rodney Fox also organizes tourist adventure trips and expeditions.

Adelaide is best known globally for its festivals. These include Schutzenfest, celebrating Adelaide’s German heritage, world music festival WOMAD adelaide, which alternates biennially with Adelaide festival of the Arts, and the alternative Adelaide Fringe festival featuring the Garden of Unearthly Delights, which hosts over a 100 different acts including music, circus and comedy, as well as sideshows and carnival rides.

Other festivals include the Rock and Roll Festival.
