It is a coastal city situated on eastern side of Gulf St Vincent on the Adelaide Plains, north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, and west of the Mount Lofty Ranges, which rise to around 700 m. The city was founded in 1836 as the planned capital for the only freely-settled British province in Australia.
Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide's founding fathers, is said to have designed the city and to have chosen its location close to the River Torrens. Light's design set out Adelaide in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parkland. This planning has made the city one of the country’s most easily navigable.
As South Australia's seat of government and commercial centre, Adelaide is the site of many governmental and financial institutions. Most of these are concentrated in the city centre along the cultural boulevard of North Terrace, King William St and in various districts of the metropolitan area.
Some 70.3% of the population of South Australia are residents of the Adelaide metropolitan area, making South Australia one of the most centralised States. Often referred to as ''The City of Churches'', Adelaide is also considered one of the nation’s premier cultural centres. It is known for its many festivals, such as the Adelaide Festival of Arts, Fringe Festival, and WOMADelaide, Australia's premier world music event.
The city is also well-known for its dining establishments. The Central Market area of the city has a very multicultural range of cafes and restaurants, while in North Adelaide, O’Connell and Melbourne Streets are the main cafe precincts.
Attractions in the city include the popular Rundle St Mall shopping area, Adelaide Zoo, which houses more than 3,400 animals, the museums of Port Adelaide, and tram trips to the seaside suburb of Glenelg.
