The Hills themselves are part of the Mount Lofty Ranges. The largest town in the area is Mount Barker.
The Adelaide Hills were amongst the first areas of South Australia to be settled by European settlers. A number of towns in the Hills, such as Hahndorf and Lobethal were originally German settlements, and their architecture still reflects this.
This scenic area’s proximity to Adelaide, home to more than well over two-thirds of all South Australian residents, has made it a popular tourist destination. Mount Lofty, at a height of 727 m, is the highest point in the Mount Lofty Ranges, and is home to Adelaide's television transmission towers, a lookout area, and a restaurant. Also nearby are the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, which specialise in plants, native and exotic, that enjoy a cool, temperate climate.
A little to the east, is the popular tourist destination, Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. The town’s heritage is reflected in the timber framing (fachwerk) of many buildings, several restaurants, bakeries and small-goods shops that specialise in German cuisine. The town is also a thriving centre for crafts and art galleries, and visitors may also tour Cedars, the former home and studio of Sir Hans Heysen.
Further east again is the city of Mount Barker, the largest city and major retail centre in the Adelaide Hills Region. Attractions around the town include the Steamranger (a steam train that tours the district), the Laratinga Wetlands walk, and the Summit Conservation Park.
To the north is another town of German heritage, Lobethal, which attracts especially large numbers of sightseers at Christmas due to its extravagant display of festive lights, a tradition that dates back half a century. German tradition is also celebrated in Fairyland Village’s life sized representation of scenes from the Brothers Grimm.
