The Eyre Peninsula itself is located at the east of the region. The peninsular is bounded on the east by Spencer Gulf, the west by the Great Australian Bight, and the north by the Gawler Ranges.
Located on the western shores of the upper Spencer Gulf, 395 km north-west of Adelaide,
Whyalla is the region’s largest city and the State’s second largest. Founded as Hummock Hill in 1901 by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company, the city has always been a centre for heavy industry, such as steel and crude oil production. Tourism in the area, however, is becoming a growth industry, with the city being a natural starting point for visitors from Adelaide and further afield wishing to explore the peaceful and relatively uncrowded beaches and attractions of Eyre Peninsula.
Situated on the Boston Bay at the southern extremity of the Eyre Peninsula, Port Lincoln is also becoming a tourist destination, offering ready access to the beaches of both Spencer Gulf and the Great Australian Bight. Among the attractions of the city and its surrounds are yachting, scuba diving and game fishing. Port Lincoln is also home to Australia's largest commercial fishing fleet and an aquaculture industry farming kingfish, abalone, mussels and oysters.
Further west along the Bight are the peaceful seaside towns of Streaky Bay and Ceduna, the last major settlement before the Nullarbor Plain for travellers heading west. To the north of these towns lies the half-million hectare Yellabinna Regional Reserve, the largest expanse of pristine mallee vegetation in the world.
Further west is the almost treeless Nullarbor Plain, which occupies about 200,000 km sq. At its widest point, stretching about 1,200 km from east to west between South Australia and Western Australia, the Nullabor is the world's largest single piece of limestone.
