About the Fleurieu Peninsula Region

The Fleurieu Peninsula Region of South Australia comprises the Peninsula itself, which is surrounded by Gulf St Vincent in the north-west and the Southern Ocean to the south, and the coastal area to the east stretching to the mouth of Lake Alexandrina and the Coorong National Park in the east.

Approximately 35 km south of the State capital, Adelaide, is McLaren Vale, one of Australia’s most prominent wine producing districts. Grapes were first planted in the region in 1838 and some vines more than 100 years old are still producing. Today there are more than 60 cellar doors in McLaren Vale, the majority being small, family-run operations. Shiraz is by far the most important variety for the region, accounting for about half of the total crush.

On the nearby coast are a number of small towns, popular with swimmers and fishermen. These include Sellicks Beach, Port Willunga, Aldinga and Maslin Beach, the latter notable as Australia’s first legalised nude-bathing beach.

The small seaside towns continue down to Cape Jervis, the southwestern tip of Fleurieu Peninsula, around 108 km south of Adelaide. Vehicle ferries use Cape Jervis as the mainland port for the crossing of Backstairs Passage to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Cape Jervis is also the starting point of the Heysen Trail walking track to the Flinders Ranges.

Nearby, to the south-east is the Deep Creek Conservation Park, 45 km sq of bushland. The gullies contain orchids and ferns, while the hilltops have stunted scrub and low windswept trees.

On the eastern base of the peninsula is Victor Harbor, the region’s largest town, a centre for whale-watching. Nearby Granite Island is home to colonies of penguins and daily “penguin walks” are held at dusk.

Further east is Goolwa, an historic river port on the River Murray near the Murray Mouth. The Murray rises in the Australia Alps, around 3,750 km away, and empties into the sea through the mouth of Lake Alexandrina.
