About the Kangaroo Island Region

Situated at the entrance of Gulf Saint Vincent, 112 km south-west of the South Australian capital of Adelaide, Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third largest island, after Tasmania and Melville Island (north of Darwin). At its closest point to the mainland, it is 13 km offshore from Cape Jervis, on the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula. The island is 150 km long, 57 km across at its widest point, and has an area of 4,405 km sq.

Though the island shows evidence of Aboriginal inhabitation, it was deserted when the first Europeans arrived. From 1802 to 1836, its only inhabitants were sealers, former sailors and escaped convicts.

In 1836, the island became the site of Australia’s first official free settlement, when the South Australia Company established its colony at Kingscote at Reeves Point. Kingscote was briefly considered as the capital of South Australia, until it was decided that this would overstretch the island’s resources.

Kingscote remains the island’s largest town and attracts many visitors, many keen to view the colony of Little Penguins that live in the cliffs. The Kangaroo Island Marine Centre offers guided walks each evening to view the penguins returning to their homes after a day at sea.

The second largest town on Kangaroo Island, and its ferry terminal, is Penneshaw, located on the north-eastern tip of the Dudley Peninsula, on the eastern end of the island.

Tourism is the island’s principal source of income, with more than 140,000 people visiting each year. Among its attractions are four national parks, home to wide range of species, most native to the island, but some – such as koalas, platypi and ringtail possums – having been introduced from the mainland.

The island also boasts a number of exceptional beaches, such as Pennington Bay (a popular spot with surfers), Hanson Bay (an excellent spot for surf-fishing), and Vivonne Bay (claimed by a Sydney University survey to be “Australia’s best beach”).
