About the Limestone Coast Region
The Limestone Coast Region of South Australia is the coastal and hinterland area of the State stretching from the east of Lake Alexandrina to the Victorian border near Bordertown. Inland towns in the region include Keith, Naracoorte, Penola, Millicent, Tantanoola and Mount Gambier, while its coastal resorts include Kingston SE, Robe, Beachport, and Port MacDonnell.
The limestone that gives the region its name was created primarily from calcite produced by the countless marine organisms that used to inhabit the area during periods of its history when it was inundated by the ocean, the most recent of which was approximately two million years ago.
Much of the region is used for forestry and farming. Viticulture is particularly successful, with wine-producing settlements such as Coonawarra, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Mount Benson being the source of a tenth of all Australian wines.
Tourism is also a major industry. In the west is the Coorong National Park, a sweep of coastline and lagoons and dune systems that stretches for around 130 km. Its blend of saltwater and freshwater environments gives the park a particularly complex ecosytem.
Further to the south-east, seaside towns such as Kingston SE and Robe attract beachgoers and fishermen. This area is particularly famous for its lobsters.
Inland, visitors are particularly drawn to Naracoorte Caves, which contains an extensive array of fossils, many belonging to now extinct marsupial megafauna such as the 120-160 kg marsupial lion.
Another major inland attraction is the Blue Lake at Mount Gambier, South Australia’s second largest city, about midway between Adelaide and Melbourne. The lake fills the crater of an extinct volcano, and is most remarkable for an extreme colour transformation its water undergoes in autumn and spring. For the colder part of the year, the water is a slate-grey, but once temperatures rise around late November, it changes to an exceptionally vivid cobalt-blue.
