The eastern Mallee area is, for the greater part, an undulating plain, once covered in thick mallee scrub of which only a fifth remains, the remainder having been cleared for agricultural enterprises. The principal towns in the mallee are, from west to east, Karoonda and Lameroo, both wool and grain centres, and Pinnaroo, a major producer of potatoes, which it celebrates in its annual Spudfest.
Along the Murray River, the region begins near Swan Reach, a small town which survived major flooding several times in its history. The area around the town is noted for its high riverside cliffs. To the south-west, the Murray flows through Mannum, for a long time a shipbuilding centre. In 1952, the town saw the launch of the first vessel, a paddle steamer, to be built on the river. Although the industry declined with the progress of railways, Mannum is still home to the largest craft on the Murray, the Murray Princess, and the PS Marion, a restored paddle-steamer built in 1896.
Further south are Murray Bridge (so named as it was the site of the first bridge to cross the lower Murray, built in 1879) and Tailem Bend, which is home to Australia’s largest reconstructed pioneer village, Old Tailem Town. From there, the Murray continues to the small town of Wellington before emptying into Lake Alexandrina.
Although the lower Murray is a popular area for touring by road, it is also extremely well catered for by companies offering river cruises, from short tours over particular stretches to week-long explorations of the waterway. More than eighty commercial houseboats are also available for rental.
