The region is a particularly important agricultural area, which produces 90% of the State’s citrus and stone fruit supplies and half its grapes. Riverland’s local profile as a wine district is not as high as the Barossa and Clare Valleys, with a large amount of its crush being sent to the better-known wineries of those districts and NSW’s Hunter Valley for use in their most popular varieties. A significant amount of the local wine is also exported, particularly to the US where the tendency for the bottles’ labels to depict native animals has led to the description of them as “critter wines”.
The other significant industry in the region is tourism. The Murray, Australia’s second longest river, is the principal attraction for visitors to the region, offering as it does a wide range of activities, from fishing, river cruises, houseboating to water-skiing and jet-skiing.
The major town centres in the area, catering both to the local farmers and to the tourist trade are, from east to west, Renmark, Berri, Loxton, Waikerie and Barmera.
Renmark, the region’s most easterly major centre, is an elegant country town in a district that, along with citrus and stone fruit farming, produces almond and pistachios, as well as roses for use by florists around the country. A rose Festival is held in the town annually in October.
Berri, on the north bank of the Murray further west, is a byword for the regions produce, Berri Ltd being one of the best-known brands of fruit juices and related products in the country. Loxton, on the south of a deep meander of the river, is home to a museum preserving the districts heritage.
