About the Yorke Peninsula Region

Yorke Peninsula is located north-west and west of the South Australian capital Adelaide, between Spencer Gulf on the west and Gulf Saint Vincent on the east. The peninsula is separated from Kangaroo Island to the south-east by Investigator Strait.

Part of the Yorke Peninsula Region is also known as the or Copper Coast, in memory of the cooper mining boom in the area that took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Specifically, the area between the major towns of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo is referred to as the Copper Triangle. As a large proportion of the miners who worked the region were from Cornwall, the Triangle area now hosts a biennial Cornish festival named Kernewek Lowender (“Cornish Happiness”), the largest such event in the world.

Visitors to the region can also inspect the remains of many of these mining operations, such as Wallaroo old copper smelter and the old Moonta mines.

The inner area of the peninsula is a major producer of grain, and of barley, in particular. The major centres of Maitland, Minlaton and Yorketown are the principal focal points of this industry. As the peninsula is not serviced by railways, the grain has been sent out by sea, leading to a larger than average number of small ports in the region, including Ardrossan and ten small towns with Port in their name.

On the coast, due to the peninsula’s closeness to Adelaide, tourism is a significant industry, with a string of small seaside towns attracting increasing numbers of holiday-makers and fishermen. The waters around the peninsula are rich in tommy ruffs, King George Whiting and garfish, as well as blue swimmer crabs, crayfish and scallops.

The region also has several conservation parks and the entire south-western tip of the peninsula is contained within Innes National Park, popular with both surfers and wildlife watchers. The area abounds with wildflowers in spring and autumn, and is home to a wide range of native animals and birds.
