About South Australia
South Australia evolved differently from her sister states, flourishing on the skills and industry of her European settlers. They built themselves communities of prosperous farms, and productive mines and the wealth generated by these built towns, railways and the planned capital city of Adelaide, neatly laid out on the River Torrens in a design planned by Colonel Light, the Surveyor General. Adelaide is built around Victoria Square, and radiates out in a grid pattern. The entire CBD is surrounded by parks and gardens, which include picnic areas, an amphitheatre, walks and cycleways and easy access to Adelaide’s imposing nineteenth century public buildings.
Just north of the capital are the Adelaide Hills, where many picturesque towns retain their immigrant heritage. Strathalbyn is dominated by St Andrew’s Church, built by the Scots who first arrived there in 1839. Hahndorf has German style timber framed houses, and you can still see the traditional crafts of woodcarving and barrel-making. Just outside Hahndorf, you can visit ‘the Cedars’, the former home of artist Hans Heysen, now a museum.
Further north is the Barossa Valley with its famous vineyards. There are over 60 cellar doors to visit, including Penfolds, Orlando and Wolf Blass, and many wineries also offer tastings and tours. The Barossa runs into the Clare Valley, where you’ll find historic Burra, once a rowdy copper mining town. Lots of the old buildings are still standing, and can be explored.
To the south east of Adelaide are the Ngarkat Conservation Park and the unique Limestone coast. Here you can visit the Naracoorte Caves, or see the Blue Lake, in its volcanic crater, which mysteriously changes colour twice a year. Close by is the Umpherston sinkhole, a classical garden created in a collapsed cave.
South Australia’s jagged coastline has three peninsulas, which means the beaches are sheltered from the open ocean. The Fleurieu Peninsula is a great for beachside holidays, and offers swimming, surfing, fishing and wildlife-watching. Just off the peninsula is Kangaroo Island, a pristine landscape and haven for endangered animals, including fairy penguins.
The Yorke Peninsula is one of the key diving areas in Australia, with no less than 26 shipwrecks in it’s surrounding waters.Visit Troubridge Island to see the1856 Lighthouse.
The Eyre peninsula is rugged and dramatic, and adjoins the Nullabor Plain. Much of it is National Park, and is perfect for 4WD holidays.
The rugged Flinders ranges dominate South Australia to the North, and its rocky landscape is full of surprises. Wilpena Pound, an amazing natural amphitheatre of stone, covers 83 square km. It is full of deep gorges, falling water and animal life. See aboriginal rock carvings at Sacred Canyon, or stop off at the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, home of the endangered yellow footed rock wallaby.
You can take a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound, or Lake Eyre, 4WD, or walk bush tracks, or ride the steam train on the Richi Pichi Railway through the ranges to Pt Augusta.
Beyond the ranges you can visit the opal mining town of Coober Pedy, and try ‘noodling’ for opals, visit an underground art gallery or play the grassless golf course.
