About FENTONBURY

Fentonbury is a village in Tasmania’s Derwent Valley Region, around 72 km from the State capital, Hobart, on the Rivers Run touring route. The nearest towns are Westerway and Ellendale. The village was named in honour of Michael Fenton, a local hop-farmer and member of the region’s Legislative Council.

The village is ideally located for visitors wishing to explore the Mount Field National Park (which is only a ten-minute drive away), one of the oldest, most beautiful and most popular national parks in the State.

Among the most popular attractions in the park are the easily accessible and greatly admired Russell Falls, Lake Dobson, walks through some exceptionally high hardwood forests and a vast range of native Tasmanian fauna. Koalas, platypi and many other native animals may be spotted in the wild by quiet observers, and the area around Russell Falls is brightened up in the evening by the light of its glow-worm population.

The walks in the park cater for all ages and levels of fitness, and there is provision for campers.

Fentonbury is an ideal home-base for anglers visiting the area, the nearby Tyenna River being one of Australia’s premier trout-fishing locations. Lake Meadowbank, a dam on the Derwent River, is also an excellent spot for catching both trout and salmon, and is only twenty minutes drive from the village.

A little further to the south-west, Lake Pedder, natural lake controversially expanded by damming in 1972, is another popular area for fly-fishing.
